WEEK 5 BLOG

Part 1   I selected the Universal Design for Learning  article by Rogers-Shaw et al. (2018).  In their article they discussed the basics of universal design and the advantages for not only students with disabilities, language barriers, and of low socioeconomic backgrounds, but also advantages for  all  learners.  Rogers-Shaw et al. (2018) stated, "UDL has been used with 'students with atypical backgrounds in the dominant language, cognitive strategies, culture, or history of the average classroom who, therefore, face barriers in accessing information when present in a manner that assumes a common background among all students'" (p. 21).  They mentioned the Goldilocks analogy for UDL in that educators need to try different methods until they find what is just right for their students. Rogers-Shaw et al. also mentions that with UDL, there is a "focus on learning relevance, value, and authenticity in terms of learners' needs and desires through the inc

Motivation is a condition that activates and sustains behavior towards a goal. This is significant throughout life; motivation meets engagement, persistence, and better learning results. Learning as the objective instead of performing as the objective is more effective in keeping the students engaged and persistent. Teachers can encourage students to focus on the learning aspects and not the grade. We do not determine students' intellectual worth based on standardized scores. How do students learn? Motivation is known to develop and change after some time. In this way, the learning experience should be dynamic. Self-efficacy, values, and interests are components within motivation that need to be considered when developing a lesson plan. Teaching needs to pertain to a specific audience. Intrinsic motivation to learn involves willingness. Students are more opted to become or stay involved in a project that they actively want to participate in and do not feel controlled. W

Authentic Intellectual Work/Authentic Instruction & Assessment  Technology is evolving, and it affects our lives. Nowadays, almost every student has a cellphone or an Ipad. Teachers have to ensure that students are equipped with the appropriate tools in the classrooms to learn.     Authentic intellectual work is different from traditional approaches as it focuses on instruction and assessment by giving individuals the opportunity to be challenged to help students apply the learning they receive in a broader context. Newmann, et al. (2007) describes Authentic Intellectual Work as the "construction of knowledge, through the use of disciplined inquiry, to produce discourse, products, or performances that have value beyond school" (p.3). Disciplined inquiry comprises three parts: prior knowledge base, in-depth understanding, and elaborated communication skills (Newmann, et al., 2007, p.4). In order to solve problems in the real world, students need to be able to ac

WEEK 1 BLOG   1. Hello everyone! My name is Abukar Bashir. I’m from Atlanta, Georgia. I have been an educator for the past 5 years. Since graduating from university, I have been living and working overseas with various US government contractors to teach Saudi Military personnel. I have worked with the Royal Saudi Air Force. I now work with the Royal Saudi Naval Force. My goal is to complete this master’s program, thus equipping me with necessary knowledge needed in today’s technology dominated world. My long term after finishing this program is to eventually become a curriculum developer. 2. Number 6, Creative Communicator, stands out to me when I examine the ISTE requirements for students considering what I often teach. Students use the platforms, tools, styles, formats, and digital media suited to their aims to express themselves effectively and creatively for a range of purposes. (ISTE) I think this is significant because I believe that many schools and teachers often fall short

My name is Abukar Bashir. I'm from Atlanta, Georgia. I did all my schooling there from beginning to end. I'm currently an English teacher Naval Saudi Forces Schools in Saudi Arabia. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Applied Linguistics from Georgia State University.           From beginning of time, I had a deep passion for teaching. I fell in love with teaching even more when I met my mentor, Ms. Owens. She was my Literature teacher and I absolutely loved her. I loved the way she taught, the way she advised, and the way she lived her life. She was very good at her craft, and I knew that is what I inspired to be one day.          After graduating from high school, I decided to take a break and get my head straight. I decided to go back to school to pursue my career in 2013. I started searching where I wanted to teach at first, then I decided Saudi Arabia would be a good fit. That's where I been for the last 5 years of my life, and I absolutely love the pl
